Tribalism

Recorded

August 27, 2012 - November 20, 2013

Genre

Industrial Punk, Ambient Electronic

"Tribalism" is a song written by Austin Scholl and recorded under his alias ThornBrain. It was released on his second album, Nobody Cares Unless You're Pretty or Dying. The ambient synth half was included on the Spider compilation as "Synthscape".

The song was sampled for Sawtooth's song "Human (I Like You)" from his 2014 album Snacks.

About

The song is about the bipartisan arguments that occur in American politics and how conflicts are not about the merits of the issues but are simply cases of "us against them". The main half was inspired by Killing Joke, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails, with the synth half being an older MicroKorg experiment that Thorn added to "Tribalism" to contrast with its heaviness.

Lyrics

I like you, you're my kind of human
You fit under my description
That's all I need to know to listen
I welcome just a little suggestion

There's a party goin' on
And it's splitting the country in two
The only solution
Is to get a little more tribal (Tribalism!)
Get a little more tribal (Tribalism!)
Get a little more tribal (Tribalism!)

Human? Please! What do they really call you
Sure you care, well that's what they all say
What's your tribe? That's relevant data
With or without I won't give the time of day

There's a party goin' on
And it's splitting the country in two
The only solution
Is to get a little more tribal (Tribalism!)
Get a little more tribal (Tribalism!)
Get a little more tribal (Tribalism!)
