"Count All the Flies in My House" is a song written by Austin Scholl and recorded under his alias ThornBrain. It was released on the Futures Passed Free Music compilation, In Two Years, and it was later included on his debut album, BlackholeWhitespace

About

The lyrics to "Count the Flies" were written several months prior to the album's recording. Unlike most other songs on BlackholeWhitespace that have a message or a narrative, the lyrics are purely free-associative, druggy, surreal imagery. Musically the song is a driving dance rock track with thick low-end guitar (no bass guitar was used); a recurring, soaring guitar hook; squalls of feedback; and backmasked guitar noodling (actually the song's main hook played through an effects pedal set to "reverse"). Label manager Steve failed to think of an existing genre to place the song in, so Thorn coined it "Avant-Dance".

The song's choral guitar hook was inspired by an interview of XTC's Andy Partridge, who talked about learning guitar by discovering how guitarists "play patterns". Thorn admits he might have repeated his pattern too much. The low-end guitar is played similarly to Black Sabbath's "War Pigs", though this was unintentional and Thorn did not notice it until well after the song was finished.

The wall of noise that opens and plays throughout the song is a recording of Thorn beatboxing the song's drum track, which has been run through a feedback generator. The feedback generator was also used in "Tell Us if You've Seen This Guy Before".

Lyrics

I like to sit on a petrified head and
Count all the flies in my house
I like to think that there's plenty more people
With insane amounts of time on their hands
I wish the voice in the roots of my teeth
Stopped buying pizza it can't afford

It makes more flies
It makes more flies
It makes more flies
It makes more flies

The door with rack on its back has a mind of its own
I try to turn the lock but it stops with an irritated groan
I want to put in the wood chipper and wait
Until the replacement comes

I like to sit on a petrified head and
Count all the flies in my house
I like to think that there's plenty more people
With insane amounts of time on their hands
I wish the voice in the roots of my teeth
Stopped buying pizza it can't afford

It makes more flies
It makes more flies
It makes more flies
It makes more flies

Invite more flies
Invite more flies
Invite more flies
Invite more flies

It makes more flies
It makes more flies
Invite more flies
Invite more flies
